How to Delete Your Account
You can delete your JShare account directly within the mobile application by following these steps:
- Open the JShare app on your Android or iOS device
- Log in to your account if you haven't already
- Navigate to Settings by tapping the settings icon in the app
- Scroll down to the "Account" section
- Tap "Delete account" button (displayed in red)
- Confirm deletion by typing "DELETE" in the confirmation dialog
- Your account will be deleted immediately upon confirmation
What Happens When You Delete Your Account
When you delete your JShare account, the following actions occur immediately:
Data That Is Deleted
- Your email address is removed from our records
- Your name (first and last name) is replaced with "Deleted User"
- Your authentication credentials are permanently deleted from our system
- Your account is removed from user search and will no longer be discoverable
- You are automatically signed out from the app
Data That Is Retained
To preserve the integrity of shared financial records for other group members, the following data is retained in an anonymized form:
- Expense records you created or participated in
- Payment records for money you paid or received
- Group memberships and participation history
- Messages you sent in group chats (attributed to "Deleted User")
- Financial balances to ensure accurate settlement calculations for other users
All retained data is anonymized and cannot be traced back to your personal identity. Your name will appear as "Deleted User" in all historical records.
Why Some Data Is Retained
JShare is a shared expense tracking application used by groups of people. When you participate in group expenses, other users rely on the accuracy of financial records to settle debts fairly. Completely removing your expense and payment data would:
- Break financial calculations for other group members
- Create inaccurate balances
- Make it impossible for others to reconcile their shared expenses
By anonymizing rather than deleting this data, we ensure that:
- Other users can continue to track their finances accurately
- Group expense history remains intact
- No personal information that identifies you is retained
Data Retention Period
There is no retention period for account deletion. Once you confirm deletion:
- Your personal data is removed immediately
- Your account is anonymized immediately
- You are signed out immediately
The deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed.
Legal Basis for Data Retention
We retain anonymized financial data as permitted under our Privacy Policy and applicable data protection laws, including:
- Legitimate interest in maintaining accurate financial records for other users
- Legal obligations to maintain transaction records
- Contractual necessity to provide ongoing service to other group members
